How David Blough Aims to Unlock the Commanders’ Offense in 2026

ASHBURN, Va. — When the Washington Commanders promoted David Blough to offensive coordinator this offseason, the move raised eyebrows across the league. At just 30 years old, Blough is a first-time play-caller tasked with fixing a unit whose production stalled last season. But inside the walls of the OrthoVirginia Sportsplex, the promotion feels less like a gamble and more like the natural evolution of a rising coaching star.

The Journey: From NFL Pocket to the Whiteboard

Blough’s rapid ascent up the coaching ranks is anchored by his recent experience on the field. After a standout collegiate career at Purdue, Blough spent five seasons in the NFL as a savvy backup quarterback, playing for the Detroit Lions and Arizona Cardinals.

That recent playing experience gives him an immediate edge in the meeting room. He didn’t just learn football from text; he stood in NFL pockets against modern defenses. Furthermore, his time as a player allowed him to absorb some of the best offensive minds in today’s game:

  • The West Coast Precision: Learned under Kevin O’Connell with the Minnesota Vikings.
  • The Erhardt-Perkins Creativity: Studied Ben Johnson’s highly adaptable, motion-heavy system in Detroit.
  • The Air Raid Spread: Spent the last two seasons as Washington’s assistant quarterbacks coach helping install Kliff Kingsbury’s shotgun-heavy, fast-paced attack.

Rather than forcing a rigid, pre-existing scheme onto his players, Blough’s philosophy is collaborative. Over the spring, he led a complete “deconstruction” of the playbook alongside his staff and key veterans, designing an offense that incorporates his players’ feedback.

The Philosophy: Balance, Motion, and Being “Under Center”

While Kingsbury’s 2024 offense was explosive, the 2025 iteration became predictable, operating almost exclusively out of the shotgun or pistol. Blough is shifting the paradigm.

Commanders fans can expect a much more diverse look in 2026. Blough’s offense will feature significantly more pre-snap motion to keep defenses off-balance and—critically—a substantial return to under-center formations. By putting the quarterback directly under center, Blough intends to unlock a more physical, varied rushing attack and set up a devastating play-action passing game.

Fitting the Franchise Franchise: Jayden Daniels in Year 3

The ultimate metric of Blough’s success will be the development and health of starting quarterback Jayden Daniels. After a historic rookie campaign in 2024, Daniels’ sophomore season was derailed by injuries, limiting him to just seven games.

  • Daniels’ Split Production (2024 vs. 2025)
  • 2024: 4,459 Total Yards | 31 Total TDs (Franchise Rookie Record)
  • 2025: 1,262 Passing Yards | 8 TDs / 278 Rushing Yards (7 Games due to injury)

Blough and Daniels already share a tight, two-year bond from Blough’s time as the assistant quarterbacks coach. That continuity has made the transition seamless, even as Daniels adjusts to the new mental demands of the playbook.

“His mobility is a superpower,” Blough noted of his quarterback. “And as we continue to use his brain to our offense’s benefit, I think you’ll see all of these skill guys get unlocked.”

The shift to an under-center offense is designed to protect Daniels just as much as it is to exploit opposing defenses. By establishing a robust ground game and utilizing play-action max-protection schemes, the system aims to reduce the number of straight drop-backs where Daniels is left exposed to heavy hits. For Daniels, the new terminology and footwork are a work in progress, but the quarterback has embraced the challenge, noting that he loves the creative designs Blough is bringing to the table.

If Blough’s collaborative, hybrid system can successfully bridge the gap between heavy under-center concepts and Daniels’ dynamic, off-script playmaking, Washington’s offense won’t just bounce back—it could become one of the most difficult units to game-plan against in the NFL.
